Language & Literature

 

Language Arts Grade 6

MYP level 1

 

MYP Aims and Objectives

In the 6th grade, students will begin their discovery of MYP Language A. They will study fiction in the form of novels, short stories, poetry, drama, and non-fiction in the forms of manuals, newspaper and magazine articles, brochures, advertisements, in printed and in electronic form. They will learn how writers use language in special ways to communicate their ideas and stories from their point of view and how they try to persuade others to believe their point of view. The students will express their ideas in both written and oral form and debate the pros and cons of various ideas. The students will research topics of interest and relevance to their lives in a global context and write reports in MLA format that convey the knowledge they have obtained in a clear, factual and persuasive manner. They will also focus on preparation for the compulsory Florida State Assessment in writing and reading.   All IB units and lessons will be closely aligned with district learning schedules and sunshine state standards in order to ensure student readiness for these tests. 

 

  • Develop inquiring minds and curiosity about the four genres of literature, fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama.
  • Acquire knowledge, conceptual understanding and skills to analyze literature and make informed decisions with the information they have obtained.
  • Develop skills of research to learn more about specific topics and write that information in a report.
  • Communicate opinions about what they have read and challenge the opinions of others.
  • Think analytically, critically and creatively to solve problems, judge arguments and make decisions in other contexts.
  • Appreciate the benefits of reading literature and writing in their everyday lives.

Language Arts 7th grade

MYP level 2

 

MYP Aims and Objectives

In the 7th grade, students will utilize their knowledge of the MYP language and relate it to Language A. They will use language as a vehicle for thought, creativity, reflection, learning, self-expression, and social interaction. They will develop critical, creative, and personal approaches to studying and analyzing literary and non-literary works. Literature from a variety of cultures representing different historical periods will be studied. Students will explore language with information and communication technology and apply Language Arts skills and knowledge in a variety of real-life contexts.

 

  • Take responsibility for their own learning through using skills to include organization, collaboration, communication, information literacy, reflection, thinking, and transfer
  • Acquire knowledge of how environments are portrayed differently within various genres and learn how our language skills enable us to understand different environments.
  • Communicate ideas, arguments and experiences accurately and in a variety of contexts
  • Develop the necessary communication skills to succeed in a real world environment
  • Think analytically, critically and creatively in various writing formats
  • Appreciate the benefits of various types of genres

 

 

 

Language Arts Grade 8

Level 3
