Beginning Chinese Grades 6-8

The purpose of this course is to provide students a language and cultural foundation for them to become lifetime learners with open-mindedness and global cultural appreciation. Through a variety of interactive Chinese performed cultural activities, students will gain Chinese language skills and competence that fit the IB learner profile: thinker, knowledgeable, an inquirer, a communicator, open-minded, caring, a risk-taker, balanced, reflective, and principled.

 

Methods of Assessment

The IB assessment criteria include 4 areas as follows:

Criterion A:  Comprehending spoken and visual text
Criterion B: Comprehending written and visual text
Criterion C: Communicating in response to spoken and /or written and or visual text 
                
Criterion D: Using language in spoken and / or written form

Spanish

Spanish Grade 6
MYP Level 1

 

 MYP Aims and Objectives
In level one Spanish, students will begin their discovery of MYP Language B.  The primary goal of the Language B subject is to promote competence in a modern language other than the native tongue.  Spanish Level One is the first step towards that competence.  Students will build a foundation of Spanish vocabulary and basic grammatical concepts.  They will also gain an understanding of cultures and communities around the world.  All IB units and lesson will be closely aligned with the Sunshine State Standards for Foreign Languages.  The aims of the MYP in level one Spanish are to:

  • Greet people at different times of the day
  • Introduce yourself to others
  • Respond to classroom directions
  • Begin using numbers
  • Tell time
  • Identify parts of the body
  • Talk about things in the classroom
  • Use the Spanish alphabet
  • Talk about things related to the calendar
  • Learn about the Aztec Calendar
  • Describe and compare weather conditions and seasons
  • Talk about activities one likes and doesn’t like to do
  • Understand cultural perspectives on favorite activities
  • Talk about personality traits
  • Ask and tell what people are like
  • Use adjectives to describe people
  • Understand cultural perspectives on friendship

Spanish Grade 7
MYP Level 2

 

MYP Aims and Objectives: 

In Spanish Level Two, students will continue their discovery of MYP Language B.  The primary goal of the Language B subject is to promote competence in a modern language other than the native tongue.  Spanish Level Two is the second step towards that competence.  Students expand upon their foundation of Spanish vocabulary and basic grammatical concepts.  They will also gain an understanding of cultures and communities around the world.  All IB units and lesson will be closely aligned with the Sunshine State Standards for Foreign Languages.  The aims of the MYP in Spanish Level Two are to:

  • Talk about school schedules and subjects
  • Discuss what students do during the day
  • Ask and tell who is doing an action
  • Compare one’s school with that of a student in a Spanish speaking country
  • Describe a classroom
  • Indicate where things are located
  • Understand cultural perspectives on school
  • Talk about likes and dislikes
  • Express how often something is done
  • Understand cultural perspectives on meals
  • Talk about locations in one’s community
  • Discuss leisure activities inside and outside of school
  • Talk about where one goes and with whom
  • Learn how to ask questions


Spanish Grade 8
MYP Level 3

 

MYP Aims and Objectives: 

In Spanish Level Three, students will continue their discovery of MYP Language B.  The primary goal of the Language B subject is to promote competence in a modern language other than the native tongue.  Spanish Level Three is the third step towards that competence.  Students expand upon their foundation of Spanish vocabulary and begin to learn intermediate grammatical concepts.  They will also gain an understanding of cultures and communities around the world.  All IB units and lesson will be closely aligned with the Sunshine State Standards for Foreign Languages.  The aims of the MYP in Spanish Level Three are to:

  • Describe families and friends
  • Talk about celebrations and parties
  • Ask and tell ages
  • Express possession
  • Understand cultural perspectives on family and celebrations
  • Talk about one’s house, including rooms and furniture
  • Name household chores
  • Tell where one lives
  • Understand cultural perspectives on homes and various types of housing
  • Order a meal in a restaurant
  • Describe restaurant atmospheres, including various types of international music
  • Identify food and animals that are eaten across the world
