This weeks topic is how to Step Up To Stronger Passwords.

Create long and strong pass phrases by choosing 4 or more words & mixing in numbers or symbols.

“I started 7th grade at Lincoln Middle School in 2010” and use the initial of each word like this: “Is7gaLMSi#2010.” Thank you for keeping our School District secure.

Escambia County Evacuations Explained

Evacuations are ordered in Escambia County for Zones A and B beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7. If you live in a mobile home or have special needs, you should consider evacuation no matter the zone in which you live.

Zone A and B include Pensacola Beach, Perdido Key and low lying coastal areas.

In Escambia County, we do not use the terms “voluntary” or “mandatory” with regard to evacuations. When evacuation orders are given, residents and visitors are expected to comply as it is a government order.

You also must consider that bridges close for safety at sustained (not gusts) wind speeds of 39 MPH or greater. At this time, this may take place as early as late afternoon. Once this happens, you will not be able to leave via a bridge and may be stranded at your location.

If you choose not to evacuate, you must understand that when sustained wind speeds reach 39 mph or storm surge cover roadways, law enforcement, emergency medical services and fire departments may not be able to come to your aid.

When the Emerald Coast Blues Brothers take the stage at the next Blues Angel Music Blues on the Bay Concert on June 4th they, like their movie counterparts, will be helping to raise money to save a program helping children. But in this instance it will be a local middle school instead of an orphanage in Chicago.

Blues Angel Music Foundation will be taking donations to help the students of J.H. Workman Middle School after a fire destroyed a portable that housed their orchestra program, last Saturday. Instruments totaling $20,000 along with sheet music and several personal instruments of students were destroyed.

The Blues Angel Music Foundation will be matching all donations, so come out and help make a difference!

Click to learn more about Workman Middle School and the fire.

Thank you,

Blues Angel Music

Over 1100 students from 31 districts across the state competed for a chance to go to Nationals. Although Workman will not be represented this year at the national competition, I am BEYOND PROUD of how well our students did in their categories!

Jr. Group Documentary--WWI Harlem Hellfighters

Michael Carter, Jake Cyr, Charles Bird

--The boys were the top two in their room and competed in run-offs. They ended in the top ten in the state!

Jr. Group Exhibit--Stonewall Riots

Amara Schoppmann, Chloe Cate

--The girls ended up in finals and placed third in the state for their entry!

This was a wonderful opportunity for our students and something I hope Workman continues for years to come! Attached are some photos, if you see the students, please congratulate them on a job well done!

J. H. WORKMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL

WINS HONORABLE MENTION AWARD

IN FLORIDA WILDLIFE FEDERATION'S

8th ANNUAL KIDS' WILDLIFE HABITAT CONTEST

The J. H. Workman Middle School in Pensacola has received an Honorable Mention award in the Florida Wildlife Federation's 8th Annual Kid's Wildlife Habitat Contest. The statewide contest is open to all children in Florida 12 years old or younger who have helped to establish and maintain a place where food, water, cover, a place to raise young are available for Florida's wildlife, as well as actions to  add sustainability to the site.

Workman Middle School students have established a habitat garden with the help and guidance of a team of teachers consisting of Yohanna Durango Arteaga, Spanish teacher, project leader and designer of the butterfly-shaped flower bed shown at the bottom of this article, Milagros Sessions, ESOL teacher and designer and implementer of the school's pond, Jennifer Guthrie, Science teacher, who researched the science aspects of a wildlife habitat and growing of native plants, as well as being the person who entered the project in Florida Wildlife Federations Kids' Wildlife Habitat Contest, and Kayla Steen,  Art teacher who along with Dina Estrada, Spanish teacher, painted the stones used in the project.

The habitat is intended particularly to nurture pollinators, particularly butterflies, but will also afford a home for hummingbirds as well as our native bees, which have been in an alarming state of decline.  Bees will locate and fly back and forth from their hives to a location that holds many of the same nectar plants that attract butterflies. Students have made plantings mainly of shrubs and perennial nectar flowers, which will bloom year after year, and have also planted milkweed, which is the specific plant that the monarch butterfly needs for survival.  The monarch is the only butterfly that migrates, as some birds do, and its survival, too, is threatened.  J. H. Workman's principal is Traci Ursrey.

A large pond at the front of the school will serve as a water source for wildlife living there as well as visiting the habitat.  There are plates and saucers kept full of water in the garden that hold rocks and sand for the butterflies to perch on while they drink. Planting of native and/or noninvasive new trees for cover for both birds and butterflies is continuing around the campus.  Nature lessons that students acquire while working in the garden and observing the life cycles and habits of the garden's wild creatures will help them to appreciate and support all the kinds of wildlife that Floridians are privileged to have in such abundance.

Florida Wildlife Federation wishes to congratulate J. H. Workman Middle School's teachers and students on their winning of this award, and to thank them for their efforts to make Florida a better place for its wild inhabitants.

Friday, March 31 was a very special day for our National Junior Honor Society Members and we would like to share it with you:

The 2016-2017, NJHS Workman Chapter members worked on their annual Community Research-Service Project, investigating the negative image of the beanie hats in society and what they could do to help change that image into a positive one. NJHS carried a research investigation and found how criminals use beanie hats to rob and assault while cancer children patients await and embrace beanie hats as a comfort clothing item that help to lift their self-esteem and develop self-confidence.

Workman NJHS members knitted beanie hats and not only they achieved their goal, they exceeded it. The students walked to Nemours Children's Specialty Care at Sacred Hospital, to present their project and donate the hats. The members showed the most out of professionalism and respect representing Workman Middle School highly in our community. Special thanks to Jenny Greunke, LCSW, Clinical Social Worker at Nemours Children's Specialty Care Center who helped us through to complete this project,

Please help me to congratulate the students for their hard work, dedication, and the positive impact they have created in our community,

Please help me in congratulating Patrice Rudolph; she placed fifth in the Prepared Speaking event. She is eligible to compete at the International Competition in June.

All six (Ava Roberts, Angelica King, Isabela Cruz, Bonnie Bruner, and Kendra Johnson) of our HOSA members that attended the conference did a great job. There was a lot of stiff competition. Over 3200 students competed at the middle and high school levels. We were so thankful to place in any event since this was our first time at a State Competition. Our kids worked really hard to prepare and it was hard for them not placing in the other events; however, we learned a great deal and we plan to come back even stronger next year.

Thanks for all of your support,

*Electronic Devices:  Students are not permitted to have any electronic devices, including but not limited to, cell phones, smartphones, and smartwatches, at any time during testing or during breaks (restrooms, etc.) even if they are turned off or students do not use them.  If a student is found with an electronic device, his or her test will be invalidated.

* Testing Rules Acknowledgement- All FSA tests include a Testing Rules Acknowledgement that reads, "I understand the testing rules that were just read to me.  If I do not follow these rules, my test score may be invalidated."  Prior to testing, test administrators read the rules to the students, and students acknowledge that they understand the testing rules by signing below the statement in their test and answer books.

* Calculator Policy- For FSA Mathematics and FSA EOC assessments, calculators may be used during SESSION 2 and 3 (if applicable) only.  Schools must ensure that handheld calculators meet the specifications published by FCOE.  Calculators are not permitted for Grades 3-6 FSA Mathematics.

*  Leaving Campus- If students leave campus before completing a test session (for lunch, an appointment, illness, etc.) they will NOT be allowed to return to that session.  Students and parents/guardians should be aware of this policy.  If a student does not feel well on the day of testing, it may be best for the student to wait and test on a make- up day.

*  Discussing Test Content after Testing- The last portion of the testing rules read to students before they affirm the Testing Rules Acknowledgement reads, "Because the content of all statewide assessments is secure, you may not discuss or reveal details about the test items or passages after the test. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, or posting online for example, on websites like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram."  Please make sure that students understand this policy prior to testing and remind them that "discussing" test content includes any kind of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, or posting to blogs or social media websites, etc.

While students may not share information about secure test content after testing, this policy is not intended to prevent students from discussing their testing experiences with their parents/families.

*  Working Independently- Students are responsible for doing their own work during the test and for protecting their answers from being seen by others.  If students are caught cheating during testing, their tests will be invalidated.   In addition, FDOE employs Caveon Test Security to analyze student test results to detect unusually similar answer patterns.  Student tests within a school that are found to have extremely similar answer patterns will be invalidated.
